What, besides prescribing antibiotics, can a dermatologist do for acne?

Not only are there oral antibiotics, but there are creams and gels that have benzoil peroxide as well as an antibiotic. Also, creams and gels like Retin A and Differin also work well for acne. For Acne that is resistant to treatments, there are also various procedures a MD can do to help. Also, there are medical type facials that use Rx strength medications to help. What, besides prescribing antibiotics, can a dermatologist do for acne?
Let me give you a few hints on what worked for myself and friends. Wash face with a very gentle scrub. Get ';proactivity'; It works . Ever notice less people have acne or it gets alittle better in the summer. Go tanning 3-4times a week, depending on skin ,till it clears up. then once a week to keep it up. I know its not the best for skin but.... it works .

But if its a prescription you are looking for here we go:

Prior to the development of isotretinoin, the mainstay treatment of moderate to severe or persistent acne was oral antibiotics such as the tetracyclines and erythromycin. While these drugs have proven efficacy, they worked against only one contributing factor of acne 鈥?the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. The antibiotics gradually became less effective over time as more resistant strains of the bacterium became prominent.

Currently, isotretinoin continues to be used only after other acne treatments fail to produce results. Treatment of acne begins with topical medications ( benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, etc), followed by oral antibiotics (or a combination) and finally isotretinoin therapy. This is because other treatments, while less effective than isotretinoin, are thought to be associated with fewer adverse effects and lower cost. The higher cost is due to the medical supervision required in taking a toxic dosage. The cost of the medicine is also a factor.

Go for my first suggestion cost is less danger is less toll on the body is much less. good luck my friend !What, besides prescribing antibiotics, can a dermatologist do for acne?
Dermatologists don't do much but throw meds and creams at you. You should go to an esthetician for monthly facials (cleans your pores to prevent clogging), go to your gynecologist to get on birth control to regulate your hormones (if you notice monthly breakouts), and start using something like proactive....anything with benzoyl peroxide. (a healthy diet doesn't hurt.) Finding the right face wash and lotion is crucial. You need to be using products on your face...makeup included...that are oil free and noncomedogenic. My face didn't start clearing up until I started using makeup that didn't clog my pores, using an oil free makup remover in addition to face wash before bed, and a light moisturizer. I have found my skin responds best to Neutrogena products along with a little benzoyl peroxide on my clean face before bed.

Everyone's body is different. If medication isn't working for you, chances are it's related to your hormones.

Well, they can do laser treatments, but each treatment ranges between $400-$700.

They can also suggest a routine and some non expensive treatments such as body wash with benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.
they could recommend face washess
